Tonsillectomy: When Is It Recommended for Children and Adults?

Tonsils help fight infection in early childhood, but for some people they cause more problems than they solve.

When is tonsillectomy considered?

  • Frequent tonsillitis, for example several episodes a year

  • Enlarged tonsils causing snoring or sleep apnoea, especially in children

  • Peritonsillar abscess (quinsy)

  • Tonsil stones or persistent bad breath not helped by other measures

  • A tonsil that looks unusual and needs checking

Coblation tonsillectomy

Coblation uses radiofrequency energy at a lower temperature than traditional methods. Many patients find it gentler, with less damage to surrounding tissue.

Recovery

Expect a sore throat for 10 to 14 days. Children often recover faster than adults. Regular pain relief, good fluid intake and normal eating help healing. Time off school or work is usually needed for about two weeks.

Know the warning signs

Bleeding after tonsillectomy is uncommon but important. Your care team will explain exactly what to do and who to contact if it happens.
