Rhinoplasty is surgery to change the shape or function of the nose. Many people think of it as purely cosmetic, but it often improves breathing too.
Functional rhinoplasty
This corrects structural problems that block airflow, such as a deviated septum, collapsed nasal valves or the effects of a broken nose.
Cosmetic rhinoplasty
This changes the appearance of the nose, for example a dorsal hump, a wide or drooping tip, or asymmetry, to suit the rest of the face.
Why combine them?
An ENT facial plastic surgeon can address breathing and appearance in the same operation, so the nose works well and looks natural.
Recovery
A splint is usually worn for about a week
Bruising and swelling settle over two to three weeks
Subtle swelling can take up to a year to fully settle
Non-surgical options
For small bumps or asymmetry, a non-surgical liquid rhinoplasty using dermal filler may be an option. It does not improve breathing and is not suitable for everyone.
